This emotionally charged painting depicts a woman with blue skin and sprawling red hair. This imaginary figure is depicted in profile, a sea star necklace resting on its bare chest. This woman is called Eurynomé, she is wearing a nautilus and has a fishing net as a shawl that she lets flow on these arms. Eurynome is a goddess of Greek mythology. She was driven from the Olympus where she reigned and found refuge in the ocean. This work represents that moment in her history, hence the melancholic expression that can be read in the gaze of this reclusive goddess at the bottom of the sea.
