This painting shows two gardeners pausing after planting a tree. This painting is inspired by the masterpiece of the painter Jean-François Millet called the angelus.
Like the Angelus, this canvas represents a simple scene that sets the immutable rhythms of the peasants. Isolated in the foreground, in the middle of an immense plain, the couple of peasants takes on the appearance of monumental statues. One of them sits on a fork, the other bends slightly in front of the plant that they surround holding a hat in their hands.
A watering can is placed beside them on this field of earth. The twilight sky is flamboyant making the scene more colorful and bright, in the distance you can see behind the vegetation a water tower with the appearance of lighthouse or cabaret.
Here, the painter’s interest is particularly focused on the realistic portraits of these gardeners as well as on the creation of this garden in relief. It is also an intimate work representing the artist’s self-portrait in his daily life.
